PTA Unlocks All Unapproved Phones To Encourage Users To Pay Taxes
Pakistani users have regained cellular connections on their PTA-locked smartphones out of the blue. Enthusiastic users took to social media to advise others on how to activate their SIM cards on their locked phones.
For those unaware, imported duty-free phones are still blocked by the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) and cannot work with any mobile network in Pakistan. However, you can still use Wi-Fi connections. Some people with unauthorized phones have haphazardly unlocked their phones in recent weeks, allowing them to reconnect to cellular networks.
This sudden change has fueled rumors that the new government has scrapped the heavy tax on expensive smartphones and advised the PTA to unlock all unauthorized devices. However, this rumor is completely false, as confirmed by the PTA itself.

The Telecom Authority said it unlocked an unspecified number of unapproved phones just to encourage people to pay taxes and unlock their phones the right way.
PTA spokesman Khurram Ali Mehran said it was just a matter of persuasion to get people to register their phones and pay taxes, no matter what. He said the PTA randomly unlocked the phones and they would all be locked again within 60 days.
