Govt Restores The Saturday Holiday For Employees And Educational Institutes
The government on Tuesday approved a two-day weekend, reinstating Saturday as a public holiday for government employees and educational institutions, months after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif abolished it after taking office. The decision was made amid rising oil prices and power shortages in the country, leading to hours of load shedding every day.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired the Council of Ministers, where measures to curb the freight losses, which had been increasing for weeks, were discussed. In this sense, the energy sector also presented a summary of the “energy-saving measure” which included a reduction in opening hours and a closure of the markets before 19:00.

The meeting decided to reintroduce the two-day weekend, with Saturday being declared a public holiday, but could not make a decision on early market closures and referred the matter to a subcommittee for further deliberation and stakeholder consultation.
During this time, the cabinet also discussed the country’s general political and economic situation and was informed about the country’s energy problems and ways of reducing the load shedding, which had multiplied several times in recent weeks.
