US reacts as Shehbaz Sharif is elected new Pakistani Prime Minister
A prosperous and democratic Pakistan is essential to US interests, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki commented after Shehbaz Sharif was elected Pakistan’s new prime minister.
Speaking at a regular news conference on Monday, he said, “We value our longstanding cooperation with Pakistan and have always viewed a prosperous and democratic Pakistan as essential to American interests. This remains unchanged regardless of leadership.”
A day earlier, Pakistan’s National Assembly elected Sharif as the new Speaker of the House of Representatives after a no-confidence motion ousted former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
Khan has repeatedly been accused of the foreign conspiracy to overthrow his government being hatched by the United States, which together turned against him. However, Washington denied the unfounded allegations.

When asked about the possibility of telephone contact between President Joe Biden and Shehabaz, he replied: “I have no call scheduled at this time. Obviously, these are assessments that are made daily and especially after the election of new leaders.”
“Obviously we have a long, strong, and enduring relationship with Pakistan, an important security relationship that will continue under new leadership,” Psaki added.
Earlier, Turkey and India congratulated Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on his victory.
