Sharron Eugene Gadlin was arrested Friday and charged with first-degree murder in the April 24, 1994 murder of Cheri Huss, according to a news release from the Riverside County District Attorney.
DNA evidence from a bite mark left on a victim has led California detectives to charge a man with murder, nearly 28 years after a woman was stabbed to death in her home, authorities said Tuesday.
“I hope Cheri and her family finally get the justice they deserve and have been waiting for,” District Attorney Mike Hestrin said in a statement.

Murder of Cheri Huss
According to the press release, Huss, 39, was repeatedly stabbed and bitten by her killer during the attack on her home in Desert Hot Springs, a town about 100 miles east of Los Angeles.
The publication said Huss struggled with his attacker, investigators concluded at the time, prompting the killer to leave blood at the scene.
Forensic testing showed that DNA from the male attacker’s blood matched DNA from the saliva of bite marks found on Huss, the statement said.
Last month, the Riverside County regional cold case team identified Gadlin as a person of interest after using forensic genetic genealogy to determine that he lived about 12 miles from Huss’ home at the time of the murder, police said.
Investigators received a saliva sample from Gadlin on Feb. 14, and days later the Justice Department lab matched Gadlin’s DNA to the profile of the alleged killer, according to the press release.

Court records show Gadlin remains incarcerated on $1 million bails. CNN has reached out to its public defender for comment but has yet to receive a response.
