Florida Educators Tied Mask To Disabled Student’s Face
A Florida father accuses educators at her daughter’s elementary school of forcing her daughter with Down syndrome to wear a mask of hers by tying her to her head for about six weeks.
Jeffery Steele’s daughter Sofia Steele does not speak and has a long tongue.
On 7th October, Sofia got off the school bus with a salivary mask tied to her head with a thin nylon cord, Steele told Fox News Digital, but he did not go to school with her that day. or every day before.
Sofia has an Individual Education Plan (IEP) and educators are expected to keep parents informed of any changes to her children’s IEPs, Steele said.
But the school never told him or her wife that they would require Sofia to wear a mask, and no one asked her parents for her consent to have it tied to their faces during school.
Steele pointed out that her daughter breathes through her mouth and cannot speak, so wearing a mask is harmful in more ways than one.
In September, Ocean Breeze Elementary School in Indian Harbor Beach enforced its mask mandate in violation of efforts by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to ban schools from forcing children to wear masks.
“The student received a medical mask exemption once the mother applied for it to the school administration,” Russell Bruhn, director of strategic communications for Brevard Public Schools, said in a statement.
“The school district determines and compiles all the facts. BPS strives to ensure that each student has the best educational experience possible and will continue that effort.”
Steele went to the school with the duty officer assigned to the school on 12th October to request answers. She said that she waited several days to express her concerns, as she needed to “take time” to recover.
During that meeting, school staff allegedly admitted to Steele that they placed Sofia’s mask on her face or held it in her place with hair clips for about six weeks without her parents’ consent.
Steele hired a lawyer and pulled Sofia out of school; he told Fox.
