9th, 10th Board Exams to be held for only four subjects and maths after 10th July: Shafqat Mehmood

Federal Education Minister Shafqat Mehmood said on Wednesday that students would not get grades without taking the exams.

A meeting of the inter-provincial education ministers took place under the chairmanship of Federal Minister Shafqat Mahmood, in which the education ministers of the provinces took part via video link. Suggestions for tests were discussed during the meeting.

Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad on Wednesday, he said the exams would start after July 10, adding that the 9th and 10th exams will be held for elective subjects.

The minister announced that at the meeting of ministers for interprovincial education it was decided that the board exams for class 9th and 10th students will only be for electives and maths, while the exams for class 11th and 12th students will only be for electives be performed.

“Last year we sponsored some children without exams, but now we’ve decided that the students won’t get a grade without taking the exams,” said Shafqat Mahmood.

He went on to say that closing educational institutions due to the coronavirus epidemic was not an easy decision, adding that the pandemic had a negative impact on education, but due to the improvement in the situation, it was decided to open 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th year. It was also decided to keep an interval between each article, he mentioned.

He said the students had seriously complained about not completing their coursework. School closings mean that pupils are repeatedly unable to attend to their studies, he complained. Most students studied just two months before the exams, he said, adding that the exams are mandatory to minimize learning loss.

The Cambridge exams were taken despite the increase in pandemic cases. For O-Level students, Cambridge has decided to hold special exams.

“We had to make difficult decisions about closing and opening educational institutions as the pandemic had a negative impact on education. All of these difficult decisions were made unanimously at the IPEMC meeting,” he said.

He said we had the experience of sponsoring non-exam students, adding that it had now been decided that no non-exam grades would be given.
